Menstruation Care: Addressing Heavy or Abnormal Bleeding

Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding can be a source of concern for many women in their early and middle years. Abnormal bleeding—such as unusually heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or periods that last longer than usual—should not be ignored. It could indicate underlying conditions like:

  • Fibroids: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding.
  • Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it, often causing heavy, painful periods.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Hormonal imbalances that can lead to irregular or prolonged periods.
  • Adenomyosis: When the tissue that lines the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus, causing heavy and painful periods.

If you experience any of these issues, it’s important to consult with your gynecologist. They can perform evaluations like ultrasounds, blood tests, and biopsies to diagnose the cause of abnormal bleeding and develop a personalized treatment plan. Treatments may include hormonal therapies, medications, or even surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.

Detecting Women’s Health Concerns Early with Regular Screenings

Pap smears are vital in detecting abnormal cervical cells that could lead to cervical cancer. Starting at age 21, or within three years of becoming sexually active, women should have regular Pap smears as part of their gynecologic care plan. The frequency of these screenings may change based on your age, health history, and any previous abnormal results. For women aged 30 and older, Pap smears are often combined with testing for high-risk strains of HPV (Human Papillomavirus), which is the leading cause of cervical cancer.

Regular screenings are especially important, as cervical cancer often develops with no symptoms in its early stages. Detecting abnormalities early allows for intervention and reduces the risk of cancer progression. Beyond Pap smears, women should also be aware of the importance of mammograms, clinical breast exams, and other cancer screenings as recommended by our healthcare providers.

Let Us Help You Be Proactive with Your Health

Taking proactive steps in gynecologic care as you move through early and middle adulthood is essential for maintaining reproductive health and overall well-being. In addition to screenings for cervical cancer and menstruation-related concerns, regular gynecologic visits provide an opportunity for your healthcare provider to monitor other aspects of your reproductive health, including:

  • Contraceptive counseling: Discuss family planning and reproductive goals
  • Ovarian health: Monitoring ovarian function as you approach perimenopause, the phase before menopause
  • Sexual health: Addressing any concerns regarding sexual activity, vaginal dryness, or discomfort
  • Pelvic exams: A physical exam to assess the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs

Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment tailored to your needs. By establishing and maintaining regular patient care with a GYN provider, you can help ensure your reproductive system remains healthy and that you have the support you need through all stages of life.

As a trusted partner in your healthcare, our providers understand that your needs evolve and change, which is why we will always provide you with the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatment options available. Reach out to us to see how we can help with your women’s health concerns.
